For Jack

I made a painting for Jack Conte, founder of Patreon. He is and always has been a talented musician and extremely nice person. If you watch his videos, that's Jack. I've known him since he was my daughter's high school boyfriend. We both serve on the board of Wonderfest, a great organization that promotes understanding and practice of science and science communication. Once a year, we present the Wonderfest Sagan Awards at Patreon's San Francisco headquarters.

I remember the origins of Patreon. Jack was making remarkable, creative videos. He spent thousands of dollars to create a video featuring lip-syncing, moving, robot heads and recreate the command center of Starship Enterprise. He made another video explaining how he did it. (Trust me, these videos are worth a few minutes of attention.) He got millions of views, but his YouTube payout was paltry. So he started Patreon.

This painting was semi-planned and semi-emergent. I drew guidelines across the diagonals and midpoints of the sides and drew then painted the black part. The rest of it emerged. I had no idea how it would end up when I started
