Remember metapattern recognition? I ended up making a 4X4 matrix of these paintings to hang on the wall in my grandson Kasra's room -- to groove in his vision. I had an earlier black and white set because color vision doesn't kick in immediately. I made the metapatterns in order to help him tune in edge detection -- which is ultimately how our visual system learns to distinguish one object from another. It turned out to be more of a hit than any of us expected. He is 7 months old now, and he is still fascinated by it. If anyone holds him, no matter where they are facing, he will turn his head to look at it. When he cries, I can often calm him down by bringing him face to face with the painting. Sometimes I undo the velcroed minipaintings and rearrange them while he watches. Now I am painting blocks, which seem to equally fascinate him.
