So....when I was hollowing out the inside, my gouge caught and the bowl got loose and crashed against the tool rest, creating a gouge in the top of the bowl where the lid fit. So I carefully carved the lid past the gouge and trued it. That destroyed the mortise, which I recreated. Then, as you can see, I fit the lid back on between centers. Because I had to carve about a quarter inch from the top of the box, it no longer made an egg shape with the top on, so I started to carve the whole thing again, which means I will have to sand it down again, which I would have had to do anyway because I noticed the rough spots toward the bottom that are visible in this photo. In the process of recarving, my gouge caught again and ripped this gaping hole. I can discard the lid and attempt to make a bowl out of it. I probably put 6 hours into this. I learned a lot about what not to do! I need to wait ten days for my woodworking teacher to show me how to better sharpen my gouges -- I think not having a sharp enough bowl gouge had something to do with the mishaps. And I am going to start again on a box with a fitted lid. I think I will keep it simple and alternate layers of (dark) walnut and (lighter but still brown) alder, and maybe one ring of maple in the middle. I will have to joint and plane the planks, cut them into 6 inch squares, bandsaw them into circles -- a time-consuming process that requires enough concentration that I can only do a couple at a time -- glue the discs together, and start again between centers.
