Magical Thought Box

This is an example of the kind of objects I've been making lately (the last couple years). I'm interested in the interaction of pigment (reflected light) and illumination (radiated light). I used a heptagram as a template (more later on how I found the heptagram as part of a device that Queen Elizabeth's physician claimed to use to communicate with angels). I laser-cut 1/8 inch plywood pieces, a couple hundred of them. Each shape was created on seven levels, with each level adjusted to 80% the size of the one below. I gessoed (painted white) each piece, glued a piece of cork to the bottom of each piece (to offset them enough to create shadows), then hand-painted them in gradients and finally painted the message. I build a hexagonal box out of Poplar, programmed an LED strip with an Arduino microcontroller, and enclosed it in the box.
